Lawsuit Challenges Illinois Judicial Campaign Finance Laws
A federal lawsuit challenges the restrictions on campaign contributions to judicial candidates in Illinois on First Amendment grounds. Democrats in the Legislature passed a bill last year that bars judicial candidates from receiving campaign money from out-of-state contributors and groups that do not disclose their donors. This year, lawmakers banned donations in excess of $500,000 per election cycle from a single source to independent expenditure committees set up to support or oppose judicial candidates. The lawsuit alleges that both laws violate free-speech rights and asks the court to overturn the laws as unconstitutional.
