California Approves Cryptocurrency Campaign Contributions

 In Blog, Updates

The California Fair Political Practices Commission approved a new rule allowing campaign donations of digital currencies such as bitcoin.  The new rule repeals the existing regulation prohibiting cryptocurrency contributions.  The new regulation permits a person to make, and a committee to receive, a contribution in cryptocurrency as an in-kind contribution through a payment processor.  Under the new guidelines, committees can accept cryptocurrency donations if they immediately convert the digital currency into U.S. dollars.

The rule will take effect within 60 days of its passage on July 21, 2022.
